Erie Mae (Dillen) McCracken Obituary:

A very sad death occured in the home of Olen Q. McCracken, of Hyde City, last Saturday, (August 2, 1919) when the wife and mother was called from this life. The cause of her death was an attack of summer troubles following the birth of a child. She was 36 years of age. Mrs McCracken was the ideal wife and mother. She was a devout member of the Baptist Church and lived the Christian life. Her sudden death cast a deep shadow in her home and over the circle in which she was best known. Deceased is survived by her husband and her five children including the infant of 11 days. The funeral was held from her late home at Hyde City Tuesday morning. Brief services were conducted by Rev. C. W. Hatch, of Bower, at the residence, the regular funeral services being held in the church at New Millport. Interment in New Millport cemetery.

Cause of death: Puerperal Infection, Duration of illness: 5 days. (Note: an infection that originates in the vagina within 10 days of childbirth, further spread of the infection can lead to peritonitis or septicemia, which may be fatal.) She married PAUL SPURGEN STEVENS. He was born January 25, 1901, and died December 04, 1966. They have one child still living.

Medical Ctr. Fort Howard, MD. He married (1) ANTOINETTE GALIO December 31, 1938 in St. Timothy's Church Curwensville, PA. She was born May 14, 1915 in Niles, OH, and died April 08, 1968 in Clearfield Hospital, Clearfield, PA. He married (2) GLADYS ANDERSON-RUCKLE September 18, 1977. Howard and Antoinette have four children still living and one son, James that died at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Oklahoma City on friday March 29,1991.

Howard Allen McCracken of Baltimore, Md., and formerly of Olanta, PA died Monday, Dec. 30, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Fort Howard, Md.

Born Sept. 29, 1911, in Ferguson Township, he was the son of Olen and Erie (Dillen) McCracken. Mr. McCracken was a coal miner, self-employed and also employed by Howe's Leather in Curwensville. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Curwensville American Legion.

His first wife, the former Antionette Galio, preceded him in death in 1968. He was also preceded in death by his sister Jessie; two brothers, Woodrow and Robert; and two half brothers Daniel and Emory.

His second wife, the former Gladys Anderson Ruckle, survives along with two sons and three daughters;  three stepchildren: nine step grandchildren and 10 grandchildren.

Also surviving are two sisters: Mrs. Amy Stevens of Lawton, Okla., and Mrs. Daniel (Erie) McCracken of DuBois; and these half brothers and sisters: Mrs. Roxie Wilt of Parris, Calif., Bruce McCracken of Alexandria, Va., Mrs. Pete (Grace) Malinky of New Millport, John McCracken of Clearfield,  Frank McCracken of Northumberland, Joseph McCracken of Glen Burnie, Md., as well as two other living half brothers and four living half sisters.


Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Chester C. Chidboy Funeral Home Inc., Curwensville, with the Rev. Hiram Westover officiating. Interment will be in Fruit Hill Cemetery, Ansonville.

Friends will be received at the funeral home from 7 p.m. today until the time of services Saturday.



James Allen McCracken: Obituary:

Former Curwensville resident James Allen McCracken, 51, of NW 30th Street,
He was born May 28, 1939 in Curwensville, the son of Howard and Antoinette (Galio) McCracken. He Worked as a security guard and was a veteran of the United States Army.

Surviving are one brother, and three sisters.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services will be held at the Chester C. Chidboy Funeral Home Inc. in Curwensville on Tuesday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Robert P. Fedor. Interment will be held in the Fruit Hill Cemetery, New Millport R.D. Friends will be recived at the funeral home from 2-9 p.m. Monday and on Tuesday until time of services.

She married (1) THOMAS EDWARD MATHEWS. He was born July 10, 1916, and died April 26, 1994 in Clearfield Co., PA. She married (2) EDGAR HARSHMAN April 06, 1946. He died June 02, 1952. She was buried May 19, 1982, Sunset Memorial Gardens; Lawton, OK

Thomas Mathews was buried April 30, 1994, Crown Crest Memorial Park, Hyde, PA.

JESSIE MCCRACKEN and EDGAR HARSHMAN had one child, PHILLIP JOHN HARSHMAN that died at 5 days old.



                  a,iv)  WOODROW BRYON7 MCCRACKEN(Olen6, Robert G5,  Hiram4,  William3, Robert2, James Sr.1) b. September 16, 1914, Hyde, Clearfield Co., PA; d. April 15, 1942, Corregidor Island  in WW II.  He is buried at Ft. William McKinley, Manila, Philippines. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
Military service: between May 07, 1941 and April 15, 1942, Pvt. 60th Cavalry Reg.

 

Lt. Gen. Masaharu Homma was the commander of the Japanese forces in Bataan and Corregidor. He launched the final battle to capture Bataan and Corregidor on April 3, 1942 with 50,000 Japanese troops. In his meeting with Gen. Wainwright in Bataan, Gen. Homma demanded the unconditional surrender of all American and Filipino forces in the Philippine Islands. Homma made the threat of considering the captives on Corregidor as hostages and not prisoners of war and that they could be slaughtered if his conditions of surrender were not met.

Kerrmoor Man is Killed in Action in Philippines
Kerrmoor - Word has been received here by Mr. and Mrs. Olen McCracken from the War Department that their son, Pvt. Woodrow McCracken, 27 was killed in action April 15 on the Philippine Islands. Although the War Department does not state the exact location where he was killed it is belived that it happened when the Bataan Peninsula was captured by the Japanese.


Pvt. McCracken enlisted in the armed forces on May 7, 1941, and October 13, 1941 was the last letter his family had received from him. He served five years in the C.C.C. prior to entering the armed services.

 

Two other sons of the McCrackens' are now serving their country. They are: Technical Sergeant Bruce Olen McCracken, 21, a graduate of Clearfield High School, who enlisted in May 1939 and at present is a candidate for West Point. He is stationed in New York City. Pvt. Robert McCracken, 25, is the other son in service and is stationed in the Hawaiian Islands. He enlisted January 16, 1940.

 

Surviving Woodrow are his father and nine brothers and seven sisters. Nine of them are now living at home.

                  a,vi) ERIE BELLE7 MCCRACKEN, (Olen6, Robert G5,  Hiram4,  William3, Robert2, James Sr.1) was born July 24, 1919 in Hyde, Lawrence township, Clearfield county, PA, and died June 30, 1989 in Sykesville, Jefferson county, PA. She married LEVI DALE McCRACKEN December 18, 1938 in Olanta, Clearfield county PA, son of FRANKLIN McCRACKEN and EFFIE JORDAN. He was born October 19, 1912 in Lumber City, Clearfield county PA, and died July 18, 1993 at the DuBois Medical Center in DuBios, PA. Erie and Levi had five children all still living.

 

Erie's mother died of complications after the birth when the baby was just 11 days old.  Erie and her oldest sister Amy were taken in by their aunt Belle Haagen. They were raised to maturity on the Haagen farm in Green township, Indiana county, PA only visiting their Dad's farm occasionally.  Amy helped to care for her baby sister for many years.  They had a very close bond for the rest of their lives.  Amy's nickname for my Mom was "Honey".

 

Erie Mae (Dillen) McCracken and her sister Belle (Dillen) Haagen were children of James Jefferson Dillen and Mary Vines.        

 

                                                           



Erie Belle McCracken Obituary:
Erie Belle McCracken, 69, of Sykesville, died Friday, June 30, 1989, at her home.

Born July 24, 1919, in Hyde, she was the daughter of Olen Quay and Erie Mae (Dillon) McCracken. She was married to Levi McCracken, who survives.

In addition to her husband she is survived by three sons and two daughters, 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister Mrs. Amy Stevens of Lawton, Oklahoma; six half-sisters, Mrs. Roxie Wilt of Parris, Calif.; Mrs. Pete (Grace) Malinky of New Millport, four living half sisters, six half-
brothers, John McCracken of Clearfield, Frank McCracken of Northumberland, Joseph McCracken of Glen Bernie, Md. and three others. 


She is preceded in death by her parents, one granddaughter, Colleen Randall, three brothers, two half-brothers, and one sister.  Funeral services were held Monday, July 3, from the Chester C. Chidboy Funeral Home Inc. in Curwensville.  Burial was July 03, 1989, Fruit Hill Cemetery, Ansonville, Clearfield Co., PA.

 

 

Levi Dale McCracken Obituary:
Sykesville - Funeral services for Levi Dale McCracken , 80, of Main Street Sykesville, and formerly of Kerrmoor R. D. 2, Curwensville, who died Sunday, July 18, 1993 at the DuBois Regional Medical Center West, Services will be held Wednesday at 2 P.M. at the Chester C. Chidboy Funeral Home Inc., Curwensville. The Rev. Richard Moyer will officiate. Internment will be in the Fruit Hill Cemetery, New Millport R.D.

Friends will be received at the funeral home from 2-9 P.M. today and Wednesday from 10 A.M. until time of service.

Born Oct. 19, 1912, in Lumber City, he was the son of Franklin Merrill and Effie Mae (Jordan) McCracken.


He was retired from Case Knife in Bradford, was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps and was a member of the American Motorcycle Association.

He was married to the former Erie Belle McCracken on Dec. 18, 1938, in Olanta. She preceded him in death on June 30, 1989. He was also preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by two daughters and three sons; 20 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

 

 

 

The second wife of Olen Quay McCracken was Elma Conrad daughter of Moses Conrad.

Moses2 Conrad (Isaac Thomas1) was born August 17, 1848 in Bedford, PA, and died March 15, 1915 in Clearfield County, PA. He married (1) Tobitha McKee. She was born 1849, and died 1869. He married (2) Mary Ellen Wood. She was born 1859, and died 1877. He married (3) Mary Ellen Condon. She was born April 16, 1860 in Shawville, PA, and died April 13, 1942. Elma E. Conrad was the 10 child of Moses and Mary Ellen (Condon) Conrad. Their other children were - 

Alice Jane Conrad, born April 19, 1879; died November 03, 1964.

Issac Nelson Conrad, born March 27, 1882; died December 22, 1948.

Hannah Ellen Conrad, born March 10, 1884; died March 18, 1958.

Annie Elizabeth Conrad, born March 15, 1886; died April 04, 1958.

            a,x) Grace Ellen McCracken, born December 18, 1924 in Ferguson Twp., Clearfield Co., PA. married Peter Malinky April 24, 1948. They had one son Peter Olen Malinky Jr.  born December 31, 1950; died July 15, 1972 in a accident in New Millport, PA.  Burial July 19, 1972, Fruit Hill Cemetery, Ansonville, Clearfield Co., PA.  They have four other children, Franklin Geprge, Jeffery Max, James Ivan and Mona Lee still living as well as Judy Malinky, a daughter of Grace McCracken born prior to her marriage with Peter Malinky.

             a,xii) William Emory McCracken  was born April 09, 1927 in Ferguson Twp., Clearfield Co., PA, and died April 15, 1981. He married Betty Joan Robertson June 19, 1948. She was born January 10, 1929, and died March 13, 1993.  They have three sons and one daughter.

                       

            a,xiii) Franklin Delano McCracken was born February 16, 1933 in Ferguson Twp., Clearfield Co., PA, and died June 16, 1987 in Sunbury Community Hospital, Sunbury, PA. He married January 18, 1958.

Franklin McCracken Obituary: (1987)


Franklin McCracken, 54, of 70 King St., Northumberland, was dead on arrival Tuesday June 16, at Sunbury Community Hospital. Born in Clearfield County on Feb. 16, 1933, he was the son of the late Olen and Elma (Conrad) McCracken.


He served in the Army as a paratrooper during the Korean War, and later began a career as a teller at the Clearfield Bank and Trust Co. He became a state bank examiner in 1970, went on to a position with the Central Counties Bank in State College, and was last employed as a vice president of commercial loans for the First National Trust Bank in Sunbury.

He was a member of St. Thomas Moore Catholic Church, Northumberland, and the Elks Lodge in Clearfield.

Survivors include his wife; seven children, three grandchildren; 10 brothers and sisters,
Five brothers and one sister preceded him in death. Mass of Christian Burial was said Friday at 10 a.m. at St, Thomas Moore Catholic Church by the Rev. Thomas J. Simpson officiating. Interment followed at Fruit Hill Cemetery, Ansonville.

The family suggests memorials be made to the Weis Center for Cardiovascular Research, Geisinger Medical Center, Attention: Development Office, Danville, 17822.
