The ancestery of the Straw family beyond Christian Straw, was conducted on site in Germany by John Reeb who very generously shared the information presented here.

Generation No. 1

1. Rachel Straw, born January 1785 in Penn's Valley, PA; died December 18, 1857 in Knox township, Clearfield, County, PA. She was the daughter of Johann Nicholas Straw and Mary Catherine Dale. She married Robert McCracken before 1807 in Clearfield County, PA. He was born 1777 in PA, and died May 18, 1852 in Knox township, Clearfield County, PA. He was the son of James McCracken and Sarah Rebecca Greenwood.


Generation No. 2

2. Johann Nicholas Straw/Stroh, born March 01, 1753 in Cacalico township, Lancaster County, PA; died August 20, 1833 in Pike Township, Clearfield County, PA. He was the son of Georg Friedrich Stroh and Anna Elisabetha Quirin. He married Mary Catherine Dale/Diehl 1775 in Buffalo Valley, Center County, PA.
 
Nicholas Straw enlisted for one year on 12/10/1776 at Buffalo Valley, PA under Capt. Wm. Gray in a regiment comanded by Col. James Potter. He was engaged in the cannoning of Trenton on 1/2/1777 and was in the battle of Princeton. He was discharged at Morristown, N. J.  It was during this time period that the name was changed from Stroh to Straw.
He re-enlisted in Col. Wiltner's regiment under Capt. Hawkins Booze and served in the first Continental Establishment for one year on the PA frontiers.  He re-enlisted again in the fall of 1778 and served as a Lieutenant in Col. John Kelley's company and again in the same capacity until finally discharged in the fall of 1782.


3. Mary Catherine Dale/Diehl,  born October 22, 1756 in Montgomery County, PA; died in Clearfield County, PA. She was was christened as Maria Magtsalena into the Lutherian Church in Centre County, PA. She was the daughter of Christian Diehl and Rachael Krebs.

Catherine Straw, born July 20, 1798; died November 26, 1877; married George Tubbs about 1818 in Clearfield County, PA; born 1798 in New York State; died 1866.  George Tubbs came to Clearfield County from Centre County about the year 1812. He was high in stature and heavy in build. He mined coal and floated it on the Sesquehanna to the eastern markets. He moved to Marron in Ferguson township in 1834 where he purchased land, cleared out a farm and raised a large family.

4. Georg Friedrich Stroh, born February 09, 1710/11 in Pisdorf, Nassau-Saarwerden. He was the son of Johannes Stroh and  Dorothea Guth. He married Anna Elisabetha Quirin May 07, 1737 in Pisdorf, Nassau-Saarwerden.

 

9 Apr 1748, Friedrich Stroh has debts, will sell house.

14 Aug 1749, Georg Friedrich Stroh has moved away to the New Land without manumission with his wife and children. They (officials) confiscated his moveables at Saarbrucken and brought them back to Pisdorf for auctioning.

6. Christian Diehl, born February 11, 1732/33 in Dutchy of Wurtenburg, Germany; died July 15, 1805 in College township, Centre County, PA. He was the son of Alexander Diehl and Elizabeth Flor. He married Rachael Krebs March 12, 1754 in New Hanover, PA.  The Diehl (Dale) families originated in Wirtenburg, Germany being Palentines.

Christian Deihl came to America September 15, 1749 on the ship "Edenburg", landing at Philadelphia from Franconia where he met and married his wife, later moving to Upper Saucon township, in Northampton County, they remained there until 1772 when he cleared a tract of land owned by Ludwig Derr in Union County that was later laid out in lots for the town of Lewisburg. Bucknell College now occupies this land.

During the Revolutionary War he lived in Buffalo Valley. In 1790 moved to College township, Centre County where he built a grist mill and a saw mill in 1796. He and his wife are burried in the old Dale burying grounds on the hill back of Lamont, PA. - A. Y. Straw pg 10

7. Rachael Krebs, born 1736 in New Hanover township, Montgomery County, PA; died December 1808 in College township, Centre County, PA. She was the daughter of John Heinrich Krebs and Barbaria Maria Krim.

9. Dorothea Guth, born September 30, 1688 in Rimsdorf, Nassau-Saarwerden; died October 31, 1765 in Pisdorf, Nassau-Weilburg. She was the daughter of Hans Daniel Guth and Anna Margaretha Bauer.

12. Alexander Diehl, born about 1710 in Dutchy of Wurtenburg, Germany; died in Union County, PA. He was the son of Jacob Diehl. He married Elizabeth Flor about 1731 in Lebanon, PA. "At his father's death, he neglected to claim his share of the estate which was placed in the English Treasury. His share amounted to about 200,000 lbs. He came to the U.S. locating in Union County, Pennsylvania.

"In 1797 the name was spelled Diehl. I have not discovered that it was ever pronounced so, nor when it was changed back to Dale."

"Susanna Dale, daughter of Frederick Dale who (Frederick) was born in 1793, told me of the first and second Henry. The dated records of the first Philip were found among the papers of his son Samuel (who was) born in 1816. The records of the second Philip were among the papers of his son George (who was) born in 1835. I started the research that brought them to light.

iv. Vivian Mcully married James Gill and had 2 daughters. She died in 2002.

v. Torrence Edward Mcully was born December 15, 1924 and died August 8, 1992. He had 2 daughters and 3 sons.

vi. Horry5 Straw, born December 29, 1867 in Clearfield Co., PA; died August 11, 1907 in Prospect, VA.  He married Mary Alice McCracken, daughter of Ashley McCracken and Emma Scott. She was born October 19, 1877 in Buckingham County, VA, and died 1985 in Prospect, VA.

i. Ashley Christian Straw, born 1903.  He married Mary Jessie Swingle. She was born 1903.


Children of Ashley Straw and Mary Swingle are:
i. James A. Straw.
ii. Mary Ethel Straw, She married Herbert Sunderland Beal.


vii. Mary Straw, born June 29, 1869; died January 1913.
viii. Amanda Straw, born January 05, 1872; died 1943.  She married Joseph Rich. He died 1918 in Curry Run, PA.  They had a son James Rich who married Loraine Bell January 1922. She was born October 01, 1899, and died February 26, 1930 in Olean, NY.


Children of James Rich and Loraine Bell are:
i. James Rich.
ii. Dorothy Rich.
iii. Helen Rich

ix. Delila Straw, born April 16, 1874; died 1922.  She married Charles Olson.
Children of Delila Straw and Charles Olson are:

i. Mae Olson.  She married Cortez McCracken, son of Ellis McCracken and Barbara Barrett. He was born December 01, 1892.

 

Children of Mae Olson and Cortez McCracken are:
i. Ena McCracken.
ii. Ellis McCracken.
iii. Bessie McCracken.
iv. Bernice McCracken



ii. William Olson, born January 04, 1905 in Kerrmoor, Pa.


x. Fannie E. Straw, born December 22, 1876; died November 1903. She was unmarried.
xi. Harriett E. Straw, born August 06, 1877; died April 09, 1888. She was unmarried.
xii. George Bernard Straw, born October 22, 1880; died 1948.  He married Needa Lewis.
