William McCracken 1785 – 1851 & Rachel Bell

William son of James and Sarah Rebecca (Greenwood) McCracken was born about 1785 in Huntingdon County Pa. and came to Clearfield with his parents about 1800/1802. He married, about 1815, Rachel Bell born September 13, 1793 at Great Island in what is now Perry County. She is a daughter of Arthur Bell and first cousin of her husband, their mothers were sisters. He is found on the early tax lists in the newly formed county of Clearfield. The first time we find him with a family is on the 1820 census when both he and his wife are between 26 and 45 and they have one daughter under 10. On the 1830 they are between 30 and 40 and have two daughters under 5 and two under 10 years. By 1840 they have two sons 1 under 5 and 1 under 10 and three daughters in each age group of under 5, under 10 and under 15. They had four daughter and two sons. Two daughters died before 1850, Mary and Elizabeth.

On the 1850 census in Bell Township he reports that he is 65 and a farmer. His wife Rachel is 58 and there are three children at home Cynthia 18, Elliott 17 and Harvey 12. It has been reported that William died January 11, 1851. The surviving children are;

Sarah McCracken

(Sarah3, William2, James McCracken1)

Sarah was born September 30, 1822 and married in 1842, John Waggoner born April 13, 1820. Throughout the records the name is found spelled as “Wagner”, “Wagoner” and “Waggoner”. On the 1850 census they were living next door to her parents in Bell Township. They both report their age as 27 (1823). They have three children; William age 7, George age 5 and Mary E age 1.  In 1860 still in Bell Township and both were age 40 (1820). The children are William 19 (1841), George 16 (1844), Robert 14 (1846), Mary 12 (1848), Isaac 10 (1850), Joseph 8 (1852) and John age 5 (1855).

Sarah and John moved to Mound Prairie Township, Jasper County Iowa after 1866 and are found there in 1870 with the following children all born in Pennsylvania. Isaac 15, Joseph 14, John 12, Sarah 9 and Margaret age 4.  In 1880 still in Mound Prairie, Jasper County Iowa only two children are at home with their parents John C. 21 and Margaret L. age 13.

On the 1885 state census in Mound Prairie Township in Jasper County Iowa he reports that he is 64 (1821) and she is 63 (1822). They have two grandchildren in the home, Laura age 9 born in Dakota and Ida May Waggoner age 5. These are the children of George and Abba (Brown) Waggoner. The mother probably died and the gtandparents took the children in to help their son.

Sarah and John are still living in Jasper County in 1900 when he reports that he is 80 years old born in April 1820 and has been married for 57 years. Sarah tells us that she was born in September 1822 and is 77 years old and has given birth to seven children with three still living. Their son John and his family live next door.

Sarah (McCracken) Waggoner died in Colfax Township, Jasper County Iowa on August 8, 1903 and is buried in the Rorabough cemetery. John Waggoner died the following year, 1904, on December 3rd at the home of his daughter Maggie Slaughter and is buried next to his wife in Mound Prairie Township. The families of John and Sarah (McCracken) Waggoner are;

William M. Wagoner

(William Wagoner4, Sarah3, William2, James McCracken1)

William, first son of John and Sarah Waggoner was born August 11, 1843 and married March 8, 1866 in Clearfield County, Margaret J. Wakefield. Margaret was born January 17, 1847 in Indiana County Pa. to Jeremiah and Mary Wakefield. William and his wife moved to Mound Prairie, Jasper County Iowa before 1869. He is  listed on the 1850 and 1860 census reports with his parents in Clearfield County. He and his wife are listed on the 1870 census in Mound Prairie Iowa near his parents.

They are shown as, William Waggoner age 37 (should be 27) a farmer born in Pa. His wife Margaret also born in Pa. is 24 and they have one son John age 1 born in Iowa. About 1872 they have moved to Fairdale, Howard County Nebraska and settled on the north side of the North Loup River across from where the village of Elba would be later developed. The earliest homesteaders in Nebraska would dig a cave in the side of the river bank called a “dugout” as their first home while they erected sod huts. They continued in this manner for a few years suffering all the disasters common to the settlement of a new territory. With superhuman efforts and persistence they eventually built a fine home for themselves and the children.  Mrs. Waggoner had been a helpless invalid confined to her room for many years after coming to Nebraska.

In 1880 the spelling is Wagoner. William is 37, Margaret 33 and ill enough to not be able to perform her duties and retains a housekeeper. The children are John A. 11, Mary Ellen 9, George W. 7, Frank W. 4 and Henderson G. 1.  The 1900 census record revels William Waggoner was born in November 1843 in Pa and his wife was born in July 1846 also in Pa. The only child at home is Henderson born in January 1879 in Nebraska and still single. In the same household are his daughter Ella and her husband William M. Hinkley and two children Ralph W. and Byron Hinkley. Next door is his sister Mary Elizabeth’s family. She is deceased as her husband, Francis Leach is listed as widowed.

In 1910, still in Fairdale,  William reports that he is 66 and has been married for 44 years and makes his living as a farmer. Margaret is 63 and tells us she has given birth to five children all living. Their youngest son, Henderson G. Waggoner, lives next door with his family. Margaret died March 28, 1912 in St. Paul Howard County Nebraska and William died May 17, 1922. They are buried in the old Elba cemetery in Howard County Nebraska. Their children are;
